EL PAÍS Prepares an AI-Powered Conversational Assistant for Testing with Subscribers
01-12-2024
The virtual assistant, currently in the testing phase, will answer subscriber inquiries based on verified and reliable content from EL PAÍS’s historical archive
EL PAÍS, beyond its core mission of providing top-quality journalism, also aims to offer the best services to its readers across various channels. To achieve this, the newspaper is working on several initiatives, including adapting to new ways of consuming information. One of these projects involves developing a conversational assistant that uses the latest generative AI language models to help readers quickly and accurately obtain information within the digital content environment of EL PAÍS. Although still in development, the newspaper will begin a testing period in which it invites a select group of subscribers to voluntarily participate in testing the tool and contributing to its final development based on their feedback.
This assistant, developed using OpenAI technology—an American company with which Prisa Media (the business unit that encompasses EL PAÍS) formed a partnership last March—will be a first for a Spanish-language media outlet. It will have access to the full historical archive of EL PAÍS, drawing from trusted and verified sources. Users will be able to make written inquiries about current topics and receive information based on the newspaper’s articles that match their interests. The assistant will be able to recommend news, reports, or opinion pieces by theme, provide lists of the latest articles by author, and share the most-read stories from the newspaper. It will also suggest books, recipes, TV series, films, and music.
Through this initiative, EL PAÍS aims to enhance the current content search and consumption experience for readers, leveraging the opportunities offered by advances in generative AI within a trusted informational environment. The AI will be able to learn from user interactions, providing increasingly relevant results based on EL PAÍS’s repository of more than two million articles published since its founding in 1976.
The newspaper will begin this testing phase in early December, making the conversational assistant available to selected subscribers for temporary testing, exclusively through the newspaper’s web version. The goal is for the tool to evolve with their feedback, which will actively help shape its functionalities.
